PARKOUR

What It Is: Parkour is about getting from one point to another as efficiently as possible by rolling, running, jumping, and climbing, often in an urban environment.

Origin: invented by a group of teens in Lisses, France, in the late 1980s

Skills: balance, strength, speed, stamina, creativity

What You Need: a good pair of sneakers and an area with different types of obstacles

Popularity: The exact number of people who do parkour is unknown, but parkour videos get millions of views.

Drawback: Parkour was created as a noncompetitive activity to train the body and mind—more of an art form than a sport. Some people think it should stay that way.

Fun Fact: The name comes from the French word parcours, which means “the way through.”

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

What It Is: Ultimate is a fast-paced team sport in which players throw a Frisbee across a field. You score goals by catching the Frisbee inside the other team’s end zone.

Origin: invented by a group of high school students in Maplewood, New Jersey, in 1968

Skills: agility, hand-eye coordination, teamwork, endurance

What You Need: a Frisbee and a field about the length of a football field

Popularity: An estimated 7 million adults and children play Ultimate in more than 80 countries.

Drawback: As a spectator, it can be hard to follow the game if you don’t know the rules.

Fun Fact: Players referee their own games.
