How do locusts affect humans?
Swarms of Terror
Two texts explore farming life past and present. The first details the locust swarms that devastated the American prairie in the late 1800s. The second is a personal essay about life on a modern-day farm.
Learning Objective: to integrate information from two texts about farming in America and write an explanatory essay
Hear the buzzes, whirs, and clicks Lauren Tarshis describes in “Swarms of Terror” in this stunning BBC footage of swarming Desert Locusts, which have threatened farmers in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia for centuries.
As a class, read this 1988 New York Times article about a swarm of locusts that plagued the skies over Africa in the 1980s. After reading, ask students how the descriptions of the locusts in the New York Timesarticle compare to the descriptions of the locusts in “Swarms of Terror.”

In an explanatory essay, compare farm life during the time of Laura Ingalls with farm life today. Use details from both texts
In a well-organized paragraph, explain one way that farm life has changed since the days of Laura Ingalls and one way that it has stayed the same. Use text evidence to support your ideas.
Research how farming technology has evolved since the late 1800s. In a well-organized essay, explain what aspects of farm life has technology changed and what has stayed the same. Use text evidence from your research as well as from “Swarms of Terror” and “Growing Up on a Farm.”
Imagine you are Laura Ingalls and write a diary entry about the arrival of the locusts swarms. Be sure to include details that show how Laura might have been feeling or what she might have been worried about during this time.
Choose another environmental disaster from history. In an essay, compare how people were affected by that disaster with how people were affected by the locusts swarms of the 1800s.
