What is the Core Skills Workout?
With every issue of Scope, you’ll get a series of skill-based activities that will help your students "bulk up" in the skills they need to become strong, analytical readers. These skills will support your reading program no matter what your scope and sequence. You can find the activities on the article pages, or download them all at right. The answers to each activity are included in the answer key provided with each issue.
The Workout includes:
Summarizing (RI.1, RI.2, RI.3)
Making inferences (RI.1, RI.2)
Text evidence (RI.1)
Central ideas and details (RI.2)
Text features (RI.7)
Text structures (RI.5)
When your students have become proficient in all eight skills, use our Read, Think, Explain activity instead. It reinforces all eight skills in one easy-to-use activity. Comes in a higher- and lower-level version with every issue’s nonfiction feature. Recommended for 8th graders!
Here are some ways you can use our Core Skills Workout:
Focus on one or two skills. Have students complete the activities for building those skills.
As skills arise in your scope and sequence, choose the activities that support your teaching goals.
Use the activities in the Core Skills Workout for differentiation and for students who need extra practice in a particular skill area.
Use the Read, Think, Explain activity to build students’ nonfiction reading stamina and to help them "put it all together."
