Scientists may soon be able to spend weeks living—and learning—more than 300 feet beneath the ocean’s surface.

You wake up, yawn, and look out your window. Instead of seeing the sun rise, you’re greeted by a school of vibrant fish swimming by. That’s because you’re living 328 feet beneath the ocean’s surface. It sounds far-fetched, but soon, scientists could live and work under the sea. DEEP,  an engineering company, is developing complex underwater habitats that will make it easier to study the ocean’s many marvels.

This underwater habitat:

  • Has openings in the floor that will allow scientists to go in and out.

  • Features capsules that have bedrooms, bathrooms, labs, and a kitchen.

  • Can allow up to six scientists to live in each capsule for about 30 days.

Diving In

Studying the ocean is critical because it’s Earth’s largest ecosystem. It covers more than 70 percent of the planet’s surface and contains about 220,000 known species. It also helps keep us alive: It’s a food source for fish, animals, and humans. The ocean circulates heat around the planet, helping to regulate the climate. And it’s home to tiny plant-like phytoplankton,  organisms that produce most of the oxygen we breathe. “Increasing our understanding of the ocean is how we learn to love and protect it,” says Sean Wolpert, DEEP’s president. 

Today scientists explore the ocean through scuba diving, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and submersibles, but each has limitations. For example, scuba diving deeper than 66 feet underwater puts divers at risk for decompression sickness, a serious and sometimes deadly medical condition. To prevent it, divers must return to the surface slowly. For example, a diver doing research might spend 15 minutes descending, less than an hour working, and a whopping 6 hours gradually resurfacing. DEEP hopes that by keeping scientists on the seafloor for weeks, these new habitats will help researchers “to accomplish several years’ worth of work in 30 days,” says Wolpert.

New and Improved

Underwater research bases aren’t new—the famous ocean explorer  Jacques Cousteau helped develop the first one in 1962. But the only one active today is nearly 40 years old. DEEP wants to create larger, more modern labs that can be easily expanded and moved by using capsules that connect like LEGO® bricks. 

While a functional full model is still a few years away, Wolpert is hopeful that more scientists than ever will soon be able to live and study underwater. Maybe you could even be one of them!
